HIKING TRAILS IN THE AREA
ROAN MOUNTAIN STATE PARK:
Turn right
on 194 South and go to stop sign. Turn right onto I 9-E (Time Square Restaurant on corner). Go past NC state line and thru
the town of Roan Mountain. Pass Appalachian
Gas Station on left side and look for intersection on left and sign for Roan State Park. Turn left and follow this
road to the Roan State Park.
At the Roan State Park, there are hiking trails,
playground, swimming pool, biking trails, the Rhododendron gardens and many
yearly festivals. You will find many activities for the entire family to enjoy.
Your hike on the trails will often bring you in contact with a beautiful,
flowing river.
ELK RIVER FALLS:
Turn right
onto 194 South and go to stop sign. Turn right onto 19-E (Time Square Restaurant on corner). Go approx.
1/2 mile and turn right as you see sign leading to Elk River Falls. Follow signs leading to Elk River Falls. This road is called Elk River Road and you will be following
the river most of the way. The road will eventually turn to gravel. There are
picnic tables along the river at the parking area. Follow the designated trail
to the 60’ waterfall. You will pass a small waterfall in the beginning, but
there is a short trail leading to the large waterfall. You may fish in the Elk River in designated areas as
well.
The Government has numerous walking trails throughout the Elk River area.
THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL:
Take 194 South to stop sign. Turn right onto 19-E (Time Square Restaurant on corner). Follow Hwy 19-E thru the town of
Elk Park and continue several
miles. Look on both sides of the road and you will see pull off’s and markers
where the Appalachian
Trail
crosses the 19-E Hwy and where you may park your car and begin the trail.
To enter from Roan Mountain— Continue on I 9-E thru
the town of Roan Mountain and turn left onto the
highway leading to Roan Mountain State Park. You will see the trail at
the top. You will see the trail at the top. You can park going north or south
on the trail. It is a bald area in either direction.
GRANDFATHER
MOUNTAIN TRAILS:
There are 9 trails from easy to very strenuous, a total of 13.5 miles,
including 15 primitive campsites and 1 log shelter. 6 trails on the 105 side of
the mountain takes hikers to the famous Grandfather Profile Rock and to
spectacular views from the summits of the highest peaks in the Blue Ridge
range. 3 trails on the Parkway side of the mountain lead to a breath taking
view of the Boone bowl area, Price Lake, Blowing Rock and then up to Calloway
Peak at 5964 feet. DIRECTIONS:
Take 194N to Banner Elk. Turn right at stoplight onto Hwy 184. Go thru the town
of Banner
Elk to next stoplight. Turn right onto Hwy 105. Follow 105 thru
Linville to the next stoplight. Turn left at the next stoplight and the
entrance to Grandfather Mountain is on your left. (From Hwy
I O5—---you will see large Yellow Signs leading you to Grandfather)
